BMW and Art History

Fascinating post over on Web Urbanist this morning about a short period in BMW's history wherein they were hiring top artists to decorate their cars, the first being this beautiful Alexander Calder model (pictured above). Other artists included Frank Stella, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Click on over to see the whole gallery. link

  1. Oh how I love Calder. And I definitely think the toy maker in him would just love this big kid toy! I didn't know about these cars; I think I'll have to include them in my art history lessons! Thanks.

  5. Lindsey, I believe he actually designed the paint job himself, right? He was "commissioned" meaning he was hired to make them.

There really needs to be a mobile hanging from that rear-view mirror. I really enjoy these cars. I hope more artists are asked to decorate vehicles.
