Etched Altoid Tins

Over at the Steampunk Workshop, Jake has written up a little article about Laurence Crunch's super-cool etched Altoid tins. Seems kind of fiddly in the process, but the end result is awesome!

This is awesome. Great choice for the illustration.

Those aren't actual Altoid tins are they? I thought Altoid tins have embossing on the lids...

Neat idea all the same. Especially love how the copper plating looks. Wonder if those can be lacquered to preserve the shine.

I recently saw an altoids tin that was not embossed, but yes, I think these are bought from a tin box supplier. I've seen them online.

Originally Altoids tins were not embossed, but as DIY folks starting repurposing the tins Altoids saw a great chance to get some new advertising. By embossing the tins, they made it impossible to cover their brand name. My best guess is that they started embossing the tins about 5 years ago.

Russell - Really? That's the story behind the embossing?
