Over at Mental Floss, they've gone on a great little fact finding mission about the man who encouraged us to paint "happy little trees". For eleven years, Bob Ross graced our screens with his blending brush and groovy 'fro. Now you can find out some little known facts about this PBS icon. link

Dude. This makes my whole week. I loves me some Bob Ross - used to watch him almost every day as a teenager. Thanks so much for this link! I love the fact that he saw the fro as a marketing gambit.

if you ever find yourself in new smyrna beach, fl.(as i did when i did my writing residency at the atlantic center for the arts) you MUST check out the bob ross museum... if i remember correctly, it's situated in a strip mall between a bank and publix groery store... it seemed a little odd at first, but going in there was really a treat and the staff are all die hard fans... :) they hold workshops there too - i was going to take one but was returning home during the next available session...

Thanks for all the comments folks. Kind of amazing that Bob had so many fans. G, thanks for the tip on the museum. In the unlikely event that I find myself in Florida, it will be my first stop.

i was reluctant to do the residency in florida (snakes, giant spiders, crocodiles, giant armadillos) but i'm SO glad i did - SO worth it... i highly recommend checking ACA out. keep an eye out for the artists, writers, musicians, dancers, theatre folk that might be doing residencies there:

some of ACAs former masters include: eric bogosian, spalding gray, nick cave, douglas coupland, ed paschke, william wegman...

three weeks of cross pollinated art inspiration in beautiful studios... surrounded by REEEEEEALLY dangerous wildlife. bring bug spray and a snake bite kit.
