Self Contained

I've seen a lot of shipping container dwellings pop up in the last two years, but this San Antonio guest house, designed by Poteet Architects is one of the most successful and beautiful that I've seen. Their portfolio also includes some pretty amazing lofts. Worth a look.

  2. kenuto - I think that's a little unfair. These people may have money, but a shipping container does make an excellent base on which to build. You may well be right, but I'm not going to be so quick to judge. Besides which, my comment pertains to the nice job the architects did, not the net worth of the people who own this building. Thanks for the comment!

  3. Very beautiful. Sleek, airy and completely opposite of what one might consider a shipping container house to be. And although it has some nice things and features, I would think that it could be replicated fairly inexpensively, especially if recycled materials were used. The windows, they might be a bit pricey, but if they could be acquired from a building supply recycling house, from a building being torn down, the rest would be easily acquired and I think a great little dwelling could be made for a few thousand dollars!

  4. Bodecoa - Thanks for the comment. I recently saw a video about what you have to do to a shipping container before you can begin to turn it into a dwelling. It's actually a pretty costly and involved process. That is, if you want it to be insulated and have plumbing and all that good stuff. This baby was probably pretty pricey, but still far short of the guest houses of the ultra-rich.

  5. I love those small, "portable" houses. Especially those with big glass walls- they make outside part of home. But I guess it creates more problems with heating ;)
Here is something similar, not made with shipping container, but idea is very alike:
