Map and Cream Paper Roses
Plug Rings by Casey
I'm digging on these electrical plug and socket rings by Casey Perez from Artifacts by Casey. I'd probably end up maiming either myself or other innocent bystanders if I was to wear the "male" end around town, but so cool, nonetheless.

Wastepaper Baskets from Waste
I'm digging the work of the Spiral Foundation for, oh so many reasons. Not the least of which are these waste paper baskets made out of plastic bags that you would normally see floating around in any metropolis, like grotesque balloons devoted to consumerism. Instead, artisans are busy repurposing this detritus into useful objects with the proceeds going to assist in the day to day costs of keeping a medical clinic running in Nepal. $36 gets you one of these babies.

Rose It - The Post It Rose
Well, there's been an awful lot of love floating around the interwebs lately and I'm taking that as a hopeful sign. I found this little beauty over on recyclart and I can't think of a better use for pink post-its. Is it still considered stealing office supplies if you make something cool out of them, or is it just upcycling?

David Keller's Digested Urbanizm
I'm loving these traditional copper vases covered with paper pulp collected from various areas in Jerusalem by Artist, David Keller. This from the site:
"the set of five vases are covered in a pulp, made out of paper collected from various places throughout the city of jerusalem. The rich texture of the external material juxtapose the shiny copper visible on the interior, creating a hard dissonance reminiscent of the cultural
and political complexity of the city. "

Free Compliments, Now a Free PDF
Seems the Free Compliments post from last week was such a hit that msteinross has gone ahead and made a free, downloadable PDF available here for your enjoyment and complimenting. Put one up at your favorite hangout today or post them all over town! Big thanks for this!

Call Me
Yes folks, those are phone books. Phone books that artist, Long Bin-Chen has carved into some amazing sculptures. I've seen some telephone book carving before, but only of the folk art variety. This stuff elevates things to a whole new level.

100 Hour Flora Skull
Illustartor, Jacob Dahlstrup took 38 days and 100 hours to complete this skull that is made up of tiny plant life drawings. Gotta admire the patience.

Paper Work: Mia Liu
I stumbled across a goldmine of sweet, sweet paper work by Mia Liu this morning when I found her Flickr stream. Hours of entertainment for you right here. Gorgeous stuff.

Subtle String Lattice
I love this window treatment featured in this Japanese shop by Camp Design. It's made out of hemp yarn stitched into window frame inserts. The strings are separated by 2mm, giving the windows a gauzy, dreamlike effect. The owners like it so much that they've foregone the traditional signage and let the windows represent the identity of the shop. Awesome!

Falling Water in Gingerbread!?!
Even if you aren't in the ho-ho-holiday spirit, you've got to respect the mad gingerbread skills going on here. You can read about the whole project and see process shots over at If It's Hip It's Here.
Oh, and Merry Christmas, if that is what you're celebrating today!
Friday
Noah Scalin's Leaf Skull
Mr. Skull-A-Day kills it again with this wonderful temporary skull made from nature's detritus. Looks like a fun way to spend the day!
Even better, it's via NotCot. Congrats, Noah.
The Compliment Bike
The Compliment Bicycle from Tom Marshman on Vimeo.
In the spirit of the previous post, Camilla turned me on to Tom Marshman's project, in which he rides around and gives people compliments on his bike. I love the looks on people's faces. Thanks, Camilla!Thursday
Free Compliments
These should be everywhere. No, really. Let's put them everywhere.
Thanks to Noah "MakeSomething365" Scalin for the tip!

Your Baby Can't Have These
Do you know why? Because the ghost of DJ Depree came back from the grave last night and visited me to let me know that House industries, at his request, had made a set of wooden blocks just for me. True story. Sorry kids, you don't want to mess with the wishes of dead purveyors of fine furniture.

Side note: Did you know that Herman Miller Co. was not only responsible for producing the Eames lounge chair amongst other amazing pieces of mid-century furniture, but they were also responsible for the invention of the cubicle, except they called it the "action office" back then. Every story has a dark side, eh?
Ikea Hack for Slobs (Like Me)
Are you the type of lazy, good for nothing that thinks coat hangars are for boosting cars and to use as a supplemental antennae on your rusted truck? Yeah, me too. That's why I love this Ikea hack from GVM in the Netherlands (of course). Now you can continue your slovenly ways without interference and claim you are just being stylish and green.

Jeff Nishinaka - Paper Master
Okay, first, before I heap praise upon Mr. Nishinaka's work, is there a rule that I don't know about that states all artists must have slow loading, annoying flash websites with the content you want to see buried so far into the site map that you feel like Indiana Jones? There isn't? Oh, okay.
Then I'll just say that this guys work is super rad. The detail is amazing, the scale is spot on, the care in which it is assembled is unparalleled. And, Jeff, I'm sorry to knock your website. It actually looks great. It's just really hard to get around in. Me want simple. Thank you.

The Plastic Bag Monster
In the capital of Slovenia, a scourge is present, and it grows exponentially by the day. Yes. It's the Plastic Bag Monster! This from the site:
"Together with Ekologi Brez Meja (ocistimo.si), Lukatarina and Eco Vitae we collected 40,000 used plastic bags and 7,500 used plastic cups from 12 kindergartens, 21 primary schools, 4 high schools and 3 faculties from the city of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and from more than 500 people from Ljubljana.
Plastic Bag Monster from Kongresni trg spreads its plastic tentacles through the streets of Ljubljana. It symbolizes the spreading of the consumerism and waste segregation. The monster itself has adjusted to the environment and therefore survived. It is supplanting us from the food chain. It just might succeed and it’s all up to us. It is reproducing with inconceivable speed and knows no mercy. It feeds on individuals’ sloth and irresponsibility."... The Miha Artnak

Dan Funderburgh's Retro Science
I don't use the words "drool" or "want" lightly, but after spying Dan Funderburgh's collection of science prints for Time/Life over at NotCot, well...drool, want, drool.
Shopping Cart Christmas Tree
What's that, boys and girls? You say you want to see a giant Christmas tree made out of shopping carts? Your wish is Santa's command.

Stuffed With Stockings
Paper Guitar
Well, there are the kind of paper craft kits where you get a few pieces, make some bends and creases and you come out with some cute little square-headed character to show your friends...and then there's this. Yep, It's a bang-on accurate Les Paul copy that you build from a kit. Any paper craft you've done in the past will seem much like you've been jumping into your swimming pool in order to practice cliff diving, after you open this package. Yours for only $60. Made in Japan.

Boris Dennler's Wooden Heaps
I'm a sucker for hidden compartments, puzzle boxes, secret rooms, etc. so you know I'm digging on Boris Dennler's "Wooden Heaps" that appear to be stacked two-by-fours and such, but are actually functional pieces of furniture when you explore them further. Also, ripe for the DIY treatment, methinks.
