How to Help Your Favorite Blogs Stick Around

There are lots of articles floating around these days about how a reader might help out one of their favorite bloggers. After all, if someone is giving you great content for free, one might occasionally be moved to donate a little money to help offset the cost of maintaining said blog. There are many ways to do this. Donations, advertising, buying a blogger's products, etc.

But in the articles I've read, there is one thing that is often overlooked. Namely, visiting the blog. You see, if you read a blog over email or subscribe to it in your reader by RSS feed, you aren't counted as "traffic" on said blog. Traffic is another form of currency for bloggers in that, the bigger the numbers of unique visitors are, the more people tend to want to advertise with you, the better you rank, etc.

I mention this, not to try and convince you to visit DudeCraft every day (although that would be great), but as a simple way to help out the blogs you love without spending any money or much time.

That being said, don't let me discourage you from donating money if you feel like you are receiving valuable or entertaining content from a blog. Cash is certainly welcome by most bloggers. Failing that, if you can spend the time to click over once a day, you're still helping out.

  1. I am a fairly new subscriber to your wonderful blog. It always makes to smile. What I find hard to believe is the lack of comments . Only one or two comments on some, zero on most. Why?? Not even a thank you from your readers. How sad. Thank you for making my day better.

  2. I am glad to find your blog as well. It was recommended by Just Something I Made. I am more excited to see that you write about crafting and creativity from a man's point of view - Am really liking your blog!

I write 3 blogs, all of which face similar challenges: few comments, funding or even traffic. Someday, somehow it will all work out. Quitting is not an option... Please add a FOLLOW ME button, I really like that blogging feature.

  3. I also love your blog. I'm wondering if subscribing through Bloglovin also cancels out the visits?

  4. Haha, I visit your blog on average twice a day! Not to mention that you have the coolest advertisers ever. They have some awesome stuff.

  6. Wow, I did not know that. I actually thought that subscribing to a blog (either to read via e-mail or a reader) was the best way to up a blog's traffic.

Honestly, I'd rather donate cash. I love my rss reader! How would you do that on Dude Craft? Do you have a donate button somewhere?

  8. The RSS feed contains the complete posts -- so there is no (perceived) need to go to the site to read an entry. It would help if the feed only contained the first X characters of text -- that way, your feed-readers could gauge their interest in a post and click through to the site to read the whole thing.
(I've put your RSS feed in LiveJournal, and 6 people in total follow the feed there.)

  11. Love your blog and often click on your links without thinking they may be paid ads--they're just stuff I want to visit.

  12. Wendell, Let me assure you, I don't do any "links for pay". I have my advertisers in the sidebar and that's it. Thanks for bringing it up!
